Apply now Work type: University Tenure Line
Location: Stanford University
Categories: School of Humanities & Sciences

The Department of Linguistics at Stanford University is seeking applicants for an open area position at the rank of tenure-track Assistant Professor, tenured Associate Professor, or Full Professor, with a starting date of September 1, 2025. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in linguistics or a related field at the time of appointment.

Applicants will be expected to teach courses in linguistics at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, and to maintain an active research program. We value candidates whose research engages with multiple subfields of linguistics and applies methodologically rigorous empirical work to significant theoretical questions. We will consider applications from scholars specializing in all areas of linguistics, and we particularly encourage applications from candidates whose research centers around sociolinguistics, computational linguistics, and/or any aspect of theoretical linguistics rooted in fieldwork.

Candidates should apply through Stanford Faculty Positions and submit the following: cover letter; CV; research statement (not to exceed two pages); statement of teaching interests and philosophy (not to exceed one page); and up to three representative samples of published or unpublished work.  Candidates will also be asked to provide the names of three references, who will be contacted as follows:

  • References for non-tenured applicants will be contacted for a letter upon submission of the application.
  • References for applicants who are currently tenured may be contacted for a letter at a later stage in the application process.

The Department of Linguistics, School of Humanities & Sciences, and Stanford University value faculty who will help foster an inclusive academic environment for colleagues, students, and staff with a wide range of backgrounds, identities, and outlooks. Candidates may choose to include as part of their research and teaching statements a brief discussion about how their work and experience will further these ideals.

The expected salary range for this position in the academic year 2025-26 is: Assistant Professor: $108,000 - $127,000; Associate Professor: $121,000 - $150,000; Professor: $140,000 - $240,000.

Stanford University has provided a pay range representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for the position. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the qualifications of the selected candidate, budget availability, and internal equity.

For fullest consideration, materials must be received by Friday, October 18, 2024. Review of applications will begin on that date and will continue until the position is filled. Later applications may be considered at the discretion of the search committee.
